Undertone

A practical warm vs cool undertone test

Warm or cool is the first Chromara axis. These tests get you close. A House still needs value and chroma before it is a wardrobe.

Why undertone first

Personal color starts with heat. If you put the wrong temperature next to your face, everything else — how light the color is, how bright it is — fights a losing battle. Chromara’s four Houses split first on warm versus cool: Vela and Kora are warm; Nira and Sable are cool.

That is not the same as “I tan” or “I burn.” Surface tone (how fair or deep you look) is value. Undertone is the hue underneath. Two people can share a foundation shade and sit in different Houses.

Do these tests in daylight, no filter, hair off the jaw, and a clean face if you can. Then treat the answer as a lean, not a tattoo.

The jaw test

Stand by a window. Hold a warm ivory or cream towel on one side of your jaw and an optic, bluish white on the other. Then swap in a gold-ish peach and a cool pink.

Watch the jawline and the under-eye, not the fabric. Warm people usually look more even, less grey, in cream and peach. Cool people usually look more even in optic white and rose. If both whites are unkind, you may be a deeper House — Kora or Sable — and the test should move to camel versus charcoal, terracotta versus burgundy.

Repeat once in a bathroom mirror under warm lamps. If the answer flips, you are seeing lighting, not a new undertone. That is exactly why Instant asks for daylight and warm indoor photos.

The vein test — with a caveat

Look at the inner wrist in daylight. Veins that read teal or olive often sit on warm skin. Veins that read blue or violet often sit on cool skin. Mixed or hard-to-see veins mean this test is weak. Olive skin in particular fools it.

Use veins only as a tie-break after the jaw test. Never as the whole analysis. Too many “twelve season” quizzes hang the entire result on this one check.

The jewelry test

This one is louder. Pull yellow gold and silver (or white gold, or platinum) and wear each for a few minutes at the collarbone.

Vela and Kora faces usually look fed by yellow gold, rose gold, brass, bronze, or copper. Nira and Sable faces usually look cleaner in silver, white gold, platinum, pewter, or gunmetal. If gold makes you look jaundiced, you are probably cool. If silver makes you look ashy, you are probably warm.

Costume metal still counts if the plating is obviously yellow or obviously white. Tiny mixed stacking is fine later; the test is about a dominant metal near the face.

How Chromara uses the axis

Warm + light + clear is House Vela. Warm + deep + muted is House Kora. Cool + soft + muted is House Nira. Cool + deep + clear is House Sable.

Undertone alone cannot name the House. A warm person who is fair and clear is not Kora. A cool person who is soft and blended is not Sable. After heat, we still have to ask: are you light or deep? Clear or muted?

That is why the free Find quiz walks seven axes, why Instant reads six photos, and why a live drape still matters. The jaw test gets you onto the warm or cool side of the studio. The House is the rest of the map.

What to do with the answer

If you leaned warm, start pulling coral, camel, terracotta, olive, and peach — and park icy grey, fuchsia, and stark black. If you leaned cool, start pulling rose, slate, true red, optic white, and silver — and park mustard, camel, and orange.

Then take Instant House Reading for $39.95 or book a live virtual from $195. The $39.95 credits toward the live consult. Either way you will land in one Chromara House, not a vague “you’re warm.”

Lighting traps

Phone cameras “help.” Night mode, portrait mode, and auto white-balance will cool a warm face or warm a cool one. Instant’s two-light requirement exists because a single lighting condition is a trap. If your jaw test in the office fluorescents disagrees with the window at home, trust the window, then confirm with Instant’s warm-indoor set so we can see both.

Makeup shifts undertone too. Orange foundation on a cool face will “pass” a gold test that the bare jaw would fail. If you wear a full face every day, do the jewelry test both ways — bare and as you actually go out — and tell the Color Icon on a live call. Instant still wants a clean, unfiltered capture.

After the test

Write down the lean: warm or cool. Then stop buying the other temperature at the face. You can still wear it from the waist down. The axis we care about is the one that photographs next to your teeth.

Next, decide value and chroma. The free Find quiz asks those next. Instant reads them from portrait, face, and eye. A live drape proves them with silk.

Vela and Kora share warmth and split on light-clear versus deep-muted. Nira and Sable share cool and split on soft-muted versus deep-clear. If the jewelry test was easy and the value test is not, that is normal. Heat is louder in a doorway. Depth shows up in a closet.

Start with Instant at $39.95 if you want a House this week. Book the live virtual if the tests tied. Do not collect another twelve-season label in the meantime.
